Dumbledore is Gay

I’m sure you’ve already heard or read about this. If you haven’t well here it comes:

Professor Dumbledore is gay. Yes, gay. It seems that the old dude had more than just brooms in his closet.

J.K Rowling, author of the best-selling Harry Potter series announced that Professor Albus Dumbledore; Headmaster of Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry; Harry Potter’s fatherly figure; and one of the key characters in the story, is indeed gay.

I’m sure gay rights activists everywhere are cheering for Rowling’s bold move. According to BBC News, Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell said "It's good that children's literature includes the reality of gay people, since we exist in every society.. But I am disappointed that she did not make Dumbledore's sexuality explicit in the Harry Potter book. Making it obvious would have sent a much more powerful message of understanding and acceptance."

Ok, now hang on a second. EXPLICIT?? This is Harry Potter for God’s sake, not Sex and the City!

I’m sure Rowling had her own reasons for announcing Dumbledore’s “gayness”. But let me tell you what I think.

I think Rowling is going political. She’s trying to increase her popularity by gaining the love and attention of all types of people. Since when did the Potter series become so sexual? The story I remember, and continue to read is the one about a group of eager students trying to make it in the world of magic and witchcraft, gaining knowledge and strength in the fight between good vs. evil.

What is the point exactly of pronouncing Dumbledore as gay? To show that even witches and wizards can be gay? So what? What importance does that have in the series?

I’m not a homophobe. I’m not against gay rights. It’s too complicated for me. I’m just against turning a story which provided us with a break from our “earthly” world - and threw us into a magical, imaginary land - into a social/political type of movie.

This lady thinks that the move was totally unnecessary.

What do you think?

This doesn't affect the story, or I sure hope it doesn't. She could probably be going politics, but the story has already ended hasn't it? Using his sexual orientation to make a statement is out of the question at the moment. Unless she wants to release another side story to the Harry Potter Saga.. who knows.

Either way, it is just pointless, uninteresting, and nonsense simply because I see it as irrelevant!

Ok I've read the Harry Potter series and never did I read anything that would indicates Dumbledore's "gayness" ?!

I've read the BBC article about her announcement, she was just asked about his "love life" and she explained that he loved Gellert Grindelwald, who's a wizard.

I don't think she had any political intentions, and besides JK is loved by many and I don't think she needs any more popularity!

She definitely doesn't need any more popularity, but maybe she's trying to appeal to specific communities like gays & lesbians. Or maybe she was just trying to stir up some contoversy. After all, in the same BBC article, its also mentioned that Catholic Church (i think) condemned her for encouraging witchcraft.

Either way, I still think it was unnecessary. Announcing to the world that Dumbledore is gay sounds pointless, unless there was another motive behind that.

She even said that if she had known it would make people happy, that she would have announced it sooner!

I mean, really, come on! She must be pushing for something..

And yes, Noufa, the series does not mention anything about Dumbledore being gay.

Rowling just announced it when she was asked about Dumbledore's "love life" in a press conference or during a book signing or something like that in New York.

I couldn't agree more. To be honest, I have not even thought about reading fictional writing for a long time. Too old for that, I guess. But have noticed that gay bashing almost disappeared in the U.S. while I was there right after Bill Clinton took office the second time. The media all the sudden started accepting this lifestyle eventhough it was almost a taboo not too long ago. Gays shouldn't try to tell us that it is normal. It is not! It happens, but it's not normal and they should fight it off just like they can fight off the urge to use drugs. cheers.

I think so too, I don't see the point of saying that. if it's said in the story ok but to say it AFTER.. hmm, not a smart move!

I noticed that most people who are constantly in the media these days are claiming they are pro gay rights and things like that.

I think they just want to increase their popularity. And a lot of these ppl dont necessarily beleive in it. God forbid they should say their true feelings, or else their career goes down the drain (case: Isiah Washington fired from Grey's Anatomy)!

Again, i'm not for or against anyone. I'm just always for saying ur opinion. Even if it means ppl wont like it.

I honestly don't care that Dumbledore is gay, I found it funny that she said it in a matter of fact way! It got some people's feathers ruffled in a funny way.

I just hope that at some point she expands on this fantastic series! TWo more movies to go if it follows the books!

I always thought he had a thing for Professor (Minerva) McGonagall.. The movies kind of implied it.. or maybe it was wishful thinking on my part!

First of all I don't think that Rowlings had any intention of making Dumbledore gay. After some things she wrote which were a bit vague to some readers, they began speculating about his sexual orientation. Rowlings saw this as an opportunity to sell her books to a new audience: The gay community, which of course embraced this as some sort of equal rights coup. It is ridiculous. Is it just me or is this harry potter a childrens fantasy story? SO why on earth is it now dealing with sexual orientation? Today you get homosexuality shoved in front of your face constantly on tv and in movies, and now we have it in kids books. I dont care what 2 people do in the privacy of their own home, but the gay community seems intent on flaunting their sexuality all the time right in front of us. I dont walk around town telling people im straight. And yet if you even question why they would say dumbldore is gay you are basically called a homophobe, and intolerant, and narrow minded...........no i just dont see any point at all in declaring anyones sexuality in a childrens story. Cant wait to see whats next: donald duck is gay, flounder from a little mermaid is bisexual, bugs bunny is having a sex change, minnie mouse is actually a man in drag........come on people its important to promote acceptance embrace this.......

zonacards u r 1000% right.

I really don't understand why the gay community wants to flaunt their sexual preferences all the time. And u said it perfectly, straight ppl dont walk around telling ppl they're straight!

And they try extra hard to influence their view points into everything. You cant see a show nowadays without at least 1 gay character.

If u think about it realistically, the majority of gay ppl are still "hiding in their closets".

But to promote it to children will only confuse them. They should grow up and find themselves, not be pushed into something from such a young age.
